How To Make a Latte in 3 Steps

How To Make a Latte in 3 Steps

There’s no doubt that nothing can beat the relaxed ambiance of a coffee shop. However, on days you can’t make it into the cafe, it’s good to have a surefire recipe on hand so you can still enjoy your favorite drinks at home.

Read on to learn how to make the most delicious latte right in your own kitchen. And who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy this recipe so much that you’ll opt for a latte at home over a trip to the cafe.

What Is a Latte?

Originating from Italy (because, of course, all the best things do), the caffè latte is a silky-smooth combo of espresso, steamed milk, and a whisper of froth. It’s similar to a cappuccino, except a latte is made with roughly one part espresso to two parts steamed milk, topped with a thin foam blanket.

And because we love options, you can make your latte into whatever you like, whether it’s an iced latte, flavored latte (hello, vanilla caramel deliciousness!), or a dairy-free delight. It’s a delicious and endlessly customizable way to enjoy the utility of your morning cup of coffee.

What Will You Need To Make a Latte?

Like most things, making the best latte starts with having the best setup. And, while there’s definitely a difference between budget and luxury espresso-makers, we’re talking more about variety, not quality. Here’s what you should have in your at-home setup before beginning your latte-making era.

Equipment

Making a latte is basically science, but with fewer explosions (hopefully). Make sure your kitchen has the following items:

  • Espresso Machine: A solid one makes all the difference, but if you’re on a budget or just want a healthier alternative, there are workarounds (we’ll get there, don’t worry).
  • Milk Frother or Steam Wand: Because flat, lifeless milk is just a crime.
  • Thermometer: This helps keep things in check — scalded milk = no bueno.
  • Burr Grinder: This piece of equipment ensures a fresh, even grind. Pre-ground espresso works in a pinch, but freshly ground beans make all the difference.

Ingredients

When it comes to ingredients, quality does really make a difference. The end result of your efforts can vary depending on the quality of your ingredients, but ultimately, all lattes are made of the same basic ingredients.

Make sure your coffee bar is stocked with the following:

  • Good Coffee Beans: Espresso is typically made with a dark roast for that deep, caramelized flavor, but a quality medium roast can also shine.
  • Milk: Whole milk makes the creamiest froth, while oat milk is the top dairy-free contender. Almond and soy milk? They work, but they’re trickier to foam.
  • Sweetener: A splash of vanilla, caramel, or even a drizzle of honey levels up your latte game.
  • Toppings: If you’re into experimenting, spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom take things to the next level.

3 Steps on How To Make a Latte

Now, let’s get to the part we’ve all been waiting for. Read on for insights on how to make the perfect latte, every time.

Prepare the Espresso

This is where the magic happens. Start with freshly (and finely) ground coffee beans. If you’re using an espresso machine, pack 18 to 20g of grounds into the portafilter and tamp it down evenly — not too loose, not too tight.

Brew your espresso for 25 to 30 seconds to pull a one-ounce shot with a nice crema on top (if it looks like muddy water, rethink your grind or pressure). Of course, you can also use some espresso alternatives that have the same rich taste but contain way more benefits — but we’ll discuss that in a minute.

Steam the Milk

This is where your latte goes from “meh” to “mmm.” Start with cold milk (yes, cold — it steams better). If you’ve got a steam wand, position it just below the surface and aerate the milk for a few seconds before submerging it slightly. Remember, you’re aiming for microfoam, not giant bubbles.

Ideally, you want the milk to reach about 150°F (65°C). It should be hot but not scalding. If you don’t have a steam wand, you can still froth milk with a hand frother, French press, or even a sealed jar (just shake it like you mean it).

Combine Espresso and Milk

Now, it’s time to bring it all together. Slowly pour your freshly steamed milk into your espresso, starting with a steady stream and adjusting as needed to create a smooth, creamy blend.

If you want to impress your friends (or just yourself), try a little latte art. If you’re a beginner, start with a simple heart or tulip design. If all else fails, just swirl it like a pro and call it “abstract.” Aesthetics aside, the goal is a well-balanced latte where the espresso shines, the milk is silky, and the vibes are unmatched.

What If You Don’t Have an Espresso Machine?

No espresso machine? No problem. While a sleek, expensive gadget looks great on the counter, you can still get your latte fix with a little ingenuity.

Some methods you can use include the following:

  • Moka Pot Method: This tiny stovetop brewer makes a concentrated, espresso-adjacent coffee that works beautifully for lattes.
  • Everyday Dose Method: Add a tablespoon of our Mushroom Coffee+ with an ounce of hot water and combine it with an electric frother. You’ll still get the robust taste of espresso, but your latte will have even more benefits.
  • Aeropress Method: Add extra coffee grounds and less water to your Aeropress to create a bold, near-espresso shot.
  • French Press Method: Brew strong coffee, then use the same press to froth warmed milk (pump the plunger like you're mixing a potion). It may not be barista-grade, but it’s still delicious — and your wallet will thank you.

While all of these methods will do the trick, we’re obviously a little partial to the mushroom coffee. But it’s not just because of the flavor or because it’s made with our product — it’s because this is the only method on the list that actually adds health benefits to your coffee.

Our mushroom coffee contains L-theanine to support sleep and relaxation, lion’s mane mushroom to encourage focus, chaga mushroom to support the immune system, collagen protein to encourage gut and skin health, and coffee extract to provide the flavor we all love. Our regular coffee only features 45 mg of caffeine per serving, so if you really want an espresso-like kick, opt for our Bold Coffee+.

How To Customize Your Late

Why settle for plain when you can go gourmet? Flavored lattes are an easy way to upgrade your day — stir in a dash of vanilla, caramel, or even a pinch of cinnamon for an instant upgrade.

Or, if you like iced lattes, pour your espresso over ice and add cold milk. The result is a drink that’s simple, refreshing, and ideal for when your AC isn’t pulling its weight. If you’re feeling extra, swap milk for cold foam or blend in a little maple syrup. Your cup, your rules.

The Bottom Line

Making a latte at home isn’t just a money-saver — it’s a skill that turns your kitchen into a mini café. Whether you have a fancy espresso machine or you’re working with a French press and determination, the key is good coffee, well-frothed milk, and a little patience. Plus, once you master the basics, you can experiment with flavors, alternative milks, and even latte art.

Of course, your latte is bound to taste better when you know that you’re not just guzzling down empty calories. Any latte made with our Mushroom Coffee+ can level up your morning with health benefits and easy-to-brew goodness. Try our mushroom blends for yourself and see the difference in real time!
